If you’re going to get into the data science industry, you need to start getting some experience and build a data science portfolio.
How can you do both at once?
Write some code.
But perhaps you need a little motivation to get you going.
Sound like you?
If so, I’ve got a little challenge for you. I call it…
The “Four Models In Four Weeks Challenge”
Here’s the challenge: implement four different machine learning models in four weeks.
There are a two goals with this challenge:
Goal #1: Learn How to Implement Four Machine Learning Models
It can be daunting getting started in data science. There are literally hundreds of different models you could create.
To narrow it down, use the following template to help determine which model you’ll create each week and how you’ll do it:
This week I will create a [Jupyter Notebook / Python script] that implements a [regression / classification / clustering] model. The model I will create is a [add model type] model.
Here’s an example:
This week I will create a Jupyter Notebook that implements a clustering model. The model I will create is a K-Means Clustering model.
Goal #2: Build Your Data Science Portfolio
I suggest creating a new repository for these algorithm implementations and name it something like “four-models-four-weeks-challenge”.
Once you create the repository, clone it to your local computer and use that to keep all your code in.
As you finish each week upload the Jupyter Notebook or Python script you create to your repository.
By the end of the challenge you’ll have four more items in your portfolio!
Let the Challenge Begin!
Now that you’ve accepted the challenge here’s what I want you to do:
- Select four different machine learning models you want to learn about.
- Use the template I provided to plan which model you’ll implement each week.
- Fire up your calendar or to-do list app and add your “This week” sentences to each week.
- Start learning!
